This is a wonderful practice with many benefits. It is especially good for alleviating many digestive problems and purifies both the physical body and its energy system. During the practice, warm saline water is drunk in combination with a set of dynamic postures specifically designed to move the water through the digestive system. The salt is added to provide an isotonic solution with a concentration similar to that of tears. This is to prevent absorption into the digestive system for maximum flushing effect.
The practice is traditionally followed by kunjal kriya (stomach cleanse) and neti kriya (nasal irrigation), which complement and enhance the purification.
The full (poorna) shankhaprakshalana requires that you follow a strict vegetarian diet for at least one week afterwards in order to stabilise the digestive system and deepen the regenerative effect of the practice. Most people find, however, that little effort is required because thanks to the powerful mental effects of the practice, craving for impure and over-stimulating food is radically reduced. If you can commit yourself to this one week of discipline, the full version of shankhaprakshalana is likely to bring about some very deep positive changes in your health, vitality and mental balance in a very short time.
If, for whatever reason, you cannot commit to the dietary change mentioned above, you can still get some of the benefits of shankhaprakshalana by doing a shorter (laghoo) version where there are no dietary restrictions.
