Shankhaprakshalana

with Satyananda Yoga Teachers

Literally “cleansing of the conch”, this is a wonderful practice with many benefits. It is especially good for alleviating many digestive problems and purifies both the physical body and its energy system. During the practice, warm saline water is drunk in combination with practising a set of dynamic postures specifically designed to move the water through the digestive system. The salt is added to provide an isotonic solution with a concentration similar to that of tears. This is to prevent absorption into the digestive system for maximum flushing effect.

The practice is traditionally followed by kunjal kriya (stomach cleanse) and neti kriya (nasal irrigation), which complement and enhance the purification.
